Value Wine of the Week: Il Casolare, a delicious Italian red.

by Russ Anderson on October 18, 2014

il casolareWeek in and week out, I taste wine. I offer those I think offer drinking quality greater than their price. Part of the fun is never knowing what wines I may experience or offer. Last weeks offer was a delicious rosé from the Loire Valley in France. This week I’m offering a delicious week night wine, perfect for fall and at a bargain price to boot.

This wine from Italy’s Marche is a delicious deep flavored offering comprised of equal parts Sangiovese and Montepulciano. It has some nice rich red fruit notes from the Sangiovese but leans heavily to the dark rich side from the Montepulciano. Not sweet, but richly fruited and perfect for some fall grilling or your favorite meatloaf recipe but also a delicious wine with eggplant Parmesan or about any other eggplant dish you can think of (ratatouille, caponata, sichuan eggplant, moussaka, baba ghanouj). The rich dark core of fruit is a perfect match for the earthy slightly bitter note of eggplant. Better yet, the wine is only $12 a bottle. It is hard to find this much flavor and quality at this price point, so it is worth stocking up on this wine.

It is such a delicious bottle, I’ve already sold what arrived last Thursday. More will be arriving this coming Thursday. For week night meals that include pasta, tomatoes, pizza even grilled burgers or Italian sausage, this is a great wine to have ready. By the case it is less than $11 a bottle.

Stop by and taste this and some other wines on this beautiful day.
