Special Wine Offer: Macon-Farges White Burgundy

PANEL - MACONHere is a real find – a value white Burgundy.

A great way to find wine values is to try wines from regions that people over look for one reason or another. The area of Macon is part of Burgundy in France, but became known for producing large quantities of rather banal and generic wine. The ease of selling Chardonnay, their primary grape, made wines of any quality an easy sell. Large producers began to pump out rivers of uninspiring wine.

Hidden in amongst these massive quantities of “plonk” hide solid producers crafting delicious wines that possess a richness of flavor and a unique voice in the wine world, often at value prices. Today’s wine proves this point.

Henri Perrusset lives in the small town of Farges-les-Macon which is actually near the French town Chardonnay. He farms just over 7.5 hectares and produces delicious Chardonnays from the limestone rich soils of the area. His is a low intervention approach in the cellar following lots of attention in the vineyard.

His Macon-Farges bottling opens with a stony richness that tilts toward citrus before swinging quickly to rich, honeyed, apricot and white peach notes on the palate, taking your taste buds for an enjoyable gustatory ride. There is almost a dose of Meursault richness to the wine, or the similarly popular St Aubin Charmois bottling we have in the store. On first taste, you can sense enough zip to tell you the wine will age for a few years or pair nicely with salads, cheeses, fresh seafood and light meats.

After 15 minutes or so in the glass, the richness of the wine starts to come to the fore front with notes of acacia honey water, mountain apple slices and white grapes. The aromas and flavors certainly tempt one to take another sip. The richness comes from the limestone soils that provide a mineral imprint and the age of the vines, 50-65 years of age. There is wine wisdom to be found in old vines.

All of this for $21 a bottle. It would be a treat at any Thanksgiving dinner and a joy to drink over the next 4-5 years. Buy some to enjoy now and a few to drink over the next year or two. I am offering 6% off of 6 to 11 bottles, and 12% off a case or more. (Note, there are a few bottles in the shop but the first case has already disappeared. There are only 15 cases available in the state, well 12 now.)
