There are a few wines that travel through the store quickly, selling out in each vintage before everyone is done tasting enough of them. Some are rosé, like the Houchart, some are white, this one is red – the Commanderie de Peyrassol La Croix Rouge.

The Wine – has great flavors and richness that are well suited to all things cooked over fire, preferably in a grill. The estate, Commanderie de Peyrassol, was first founded by the Knights Templar with a first recorded harvest in 1256. The current family, bought the estate in 1870, after the French Revolution. In 1977 Francoise Rigord decided to bottle and market the estates wines and with time.

The Flavors – The wine exhibits rich dried red fruit aromas that fully develop in the glass after the bottle is open for about an hour. This depth of flavor, due to the strong Provencal sun and stony soils, is perfectly suited to summer grilling and BBQ. Equally, it will equally compliment something simple but richly flavored like a toasted baguette with olive tapenade. On the nose there is a rich compote of dried reds fruits, stewed blackberries which follow through on the palate with a touch of smoke and cinnamon bark.

The Pitch – Each year, the flavors and the value of this wine cause it to sell out before Fall is in full swing. It normally runs $15, on a pre-sale basis (some to arrive tomorrow, more next week), I am offering 5% off a 3 bottle purchase and 10% off 6 bottles or more. The beauty of this is that the wine will drink better and better throughout the summer, improving over the next 4 – 6 months. It is perfect for grill nights (from hamburgers to portobellos to leg of lamb), braised meats and summer nights in the mountains or cool nights at the beach.
